Books and Boxes, 2000/2001

Work made during this period examined the complexities of human behaviour - how we present ourselves to each other, what we conceal and reveal; how we are informed and influenced by our social, cultural and personal experience. We are brought up in a world of taboos, traditions and codes of conduct, written and unwritten rules which add to the many complex contradictions contained within each of us. The varied facets of our persona combine in an uneasy, shifting space - the physical, the emotional and the spiritual as well as the public and the private.

These works made during the period 2000/2001, investigated diaries and keepsakes, books and boxes, invested and embossed with the stains and traces of life’s experiences, hidden or carefully put away – but impossible to discard.
